And how! Maybe the first 5-6 Km. but after... I'm not Pantani. If I remember that Simpson died in 1967 in the last 2 Km. and Eddy Merckx in 1970 fainted after the finishing line...

You remember correctly in both cases.
Tom Simpson died about 800m from the summit (distance along the road, not vertically). But he was taking amphetamines and alcohol at the time and was severely dehydrated. His death was a problem with pro-cycling at that time, rather than a problem with the idea of riding a bike up Mont Ventoux per se. Of course, pro-cycling is still a complete mess of drugs, even forty years later. *sigh*
