Just had a thought. Why not change the open games page so that, instead of showing all open games, it only shows the games that the user could accept? That way, the challenges for people with impossible ratings wouldn't bother anyone.

I do agree with that. A 1400 should be free and able to challenge any player directly. Just consider there are only 2 players with a ranking above 2500. I then think the chance either one of those looks at the open challenges page and accept that challenge is minor. That's my point. To refine the request, would it be possible to check the min and max rating entered in an open challenge against the ratings of all active members?
