Dear Miguel,

I recall that one of the problems with a setup position is that it not guarantee the fairness of the game, and then cannot be rated.

But if you use as end positions a limited range of positions, than you have control of what is used.

I was wondering if our "Opening Browser" could not be used in such a way.

All the moves in the current opening browser lead to theoretic positions that are believed to be equal for both sides.

How about that?

Cheers and keep up your good work!
Beco.

1.e4 a6 and 1.e4 h6 are both in the opening browser but current theory views neither as `equal'. ;-)

Hi,
The opening browser is a roll of moves that along time was kept on the files about chess as consecrated openings because used by great masters. That is only a library which facilitates to the player study and to do your move. Closed with Richerby, of course some openings aren´t best more considered or equal for another. But I could say: the library doesn´t choose the book for the reader, but the reader chooses the book.

Well, for a thematic tournament, I think it is ok if tournament director choose the theme "1.e4 a6".
It may not be the best move, but there is still plenty of good fight.

Cheers,
Beco.

PS. And if we do find some lines that has "real" problems, the main point of this post still holds: we can have a pre-definition of openings that can be used to start rated thematic tournaments. If this pre-definitions cant be exactly the database of the current opening browser, let it be another more restricted database.
