Topic: What advantage does a knight and bishop have?

I have been playing chess for a while and I have preferred to exchange a knight for a bishop during early stages of the game. At least, this is what the I read in some of the chess books.
In my experience the bishop has more mobility than a knight and is usually effective in pins.
Does anyone have any other ideas and contentions on why a bishop is better than a knight? Under which circumstances can you maximize a bishop and a knight as well?

Hi. I prefer bishops in "open" games and knights in "closed" games.
In essence, a bishop's mobility is accentuated in games where there are open lines for movement, while a knight's ability to "jump over" pawn walls makes it more valuable in closed games.
Similarly, knights are a bit better in endgames where the remaining pawns are "clustered" together. Bishops are generally better in endgames where pawns are scattered.
