I could be picky and point out that Morphy wasn't a GM but then you'd all hate me.

He was not a Grand Mother David?
Oke; Kasparov 4 votes, Fisher 2 and 1 for Morphy. Who else?

Morphy was the best in the world at his time so he was sure that we call to day: GM... I vote Kasparov for his great skills and world champion career also for his great tornament victoris..Anatoly Karpov is short behind him as he is most tournament winner ever + world champ!

That makes sence Gambitshark. Paul Morphy was W.C. from 1858-1862. The title "GM" was first formally conferred by the russian Tsar Nicholas II, who awarded it in 1914 to five players; Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch and Marshall. The FIDE was founded in Paris in 1924, but did not get around with the criteria on who should earn the title. FIDE first awarded the Official GM title in 1950 to 27 players. If you want to know those names...
