I'm a new user to this site and find it very nice... I wanted to know whether there is any way that i can start a new tournament myself or the only way tournaments are generated is automatically by the server?

I could not find any Swiss system tournaments in the tournaments list... Is the feature not yet available or are Swiss system tournaments provided only occasionally?

You can start your own tournament by clicking on `My Games' and looking in the box of links at the top right. This really ought to be in a more obvious place and mentioned in the help pages -- people ask about it all the time.

User-created tournaments can only be Swiss system. The automatic tournaments are always double round robin but there's an anniversary Swiss tournament every year.

Is the number of rounds fixed, or can it be changed?

And can you create an all-play-all by any other name by having one more player than the number of rounds?

It's fixed. There's a certain number of rounds that makes most sense for a Swiss tournament with a given number of players -- basically, enough to separate the players but not so many that things drag on with redundant games. Essentially, once the top few players have met, further rounds don't do an awful lot for deciding the positions.

It would, in theory, be possible to create a round-robin tournament by operating a Swiss tournament as you describe, though it would be a lot of work for the pairing algorithm and might lead to a situation where people played several more games with one colour than the other -- the Swiss pairing algorithm isn't a good way to run a round-robin tournament.

It would be nice if the site allowed user-created round-robins. This was suggested some while ago, as I recall.

richerby, thanks for your reply...

Now I have another problem... How to join a private tournament?

You need to be invited by the tournament organizer. The invite includes a link to the tournament page, where you can accept or decline the invitation.
