This game reached a position where white is a pawn down. One continuation lead to an early end game a pawn down, the other continuation attempted to make use of the opened f-file.

1. d4 e6 2. c4 Nf6 3. Bg5 Pins the knight
Be7 release the pin
4. Nf3 d6 Black is 'turtling': keeping his pieces back avoiding creating any weakness for white. White responds by continuing with normal development... black should end up controlling less space ( so less good spots for pieces ) unless he breaks up the pawn structure, however white will require patience
5. Nc3 a6 One too many turtle moves? Whites knight was not heading for b5. A possible pawn break with b4 would have been met with e3 so that on b5 the knight can reposition to the king side for attack or on bxc5 then Bxc5 developing the bishop
6. e3 Normal development + b5 would now lose a pawn
O-O 7. Bd3 completes minor piece development
Ng4 Threatens Bxg5
8. h3 Expecting Bxg5 hxg4 opening the h file directly for the rook to the king
Nxf2 This move surprised me, but on the face of it, it wins a pawn. There are two continuations the text, and Bxg7 Nxd1 Bxd8 Nxc3 Na4 Rxd8 bxc3 leaving white a pawn down and a weak pawn structure compared with blacks, and although white would have an extra tempo after kingside castling it would be hard to make something useful out of it
9. Kxf2 Take the pawn hit immediately, but don't continue to trade off pieces. The king take opens up the f-file hopefully for use by the queens rook. White will launch a kingside attack and hope to hide the king centrally at e2
Bxg5 Leaves black a pawn up, white would be playing with fire if Nxg5 Qxg5 bringing blacks queen into the attack, and trading down when materially down
10. Qc2 attacks h7
g6 protects h7
11. h4 kicks the bishop back
Bf6 or h6 both planning Bg7
12. h5 attacks g6 threatening to take it or to move to h6 creating a serious weakness at g7
c6 expected Qe8 indirectly protecting the pawn capture that follows in the text. Alternatively B or N to d2 trying to get help to the kingside
13. hxg6 weakens the kingside and threatens capture with check if ignored ( or worse )
fxg6 hxg6 results in the same as text
14. Bxg6 already a pawn down white sacrifices the bishop for two pawns and a deadly attack
hxg6 15. Qxg6+ I had actually incorrectly calculated this move as being mate a while back missing the text move
Bg7 White is now down two pawns so needs to throw everything at the king
16. Ne4 Threatening Ng5 followed by Qh7 mate
Rf5 Ng5 is prevented because Qxg5 takes it for free since the other knight is pinned
17. Ke2 release the knight from the pin reintroducing the above threat
d5 The knight on e4 prevents the reinforcing move Qf6
18. Nfg5 Threatens Rh7 Kf1 Qxg7+ Ke1 Rh8+ Rf8 Rxf8#
Kf8 19. Nh7+ If Kg8 N ( e ) f6+ Rxf6 Nxf6+ Qxf6 Qh7+ Kf8 Raf1 wins the queen
Ke7 20. Qxg7+ White goes a pawn up with tempo
Rf7 21. Qg5+ Ke8 leads to Nd6+ Qxd6 ( or lose the rook ) Nf6+ Ke7 ( else whites rook comes to h8 ) Ne4+ and blacks queen is lost
Kd7 22. Nhf6+ Opens the h file for the white rook. White cant sacrifice Rxf6 because of this. Ke7 leads to Nxd5++ and a repeat of the position a pawn down
Kc7 23. c5 threatens Qe5+ Qd6 Qxd6#
b6 24. Qe5+ Kb7 The only other move loses the queen
25. Nd6+ forks the king and rook
Ka7 26. Nxf7 Now the queen is threatened
Qe7 27. Rh7 Lines up the queen and king
Nd7 removes the pin threat
28. Qc7+ not cxb6 where the king can escape ( temporarily )
Bb7 forced
29. Nxd7 Threatens Qxb6# or cxb6#
Rc8 Attacks the queen makes room at a8 for the king
30. Qxb6+ Ka8 forced
31. Nd6 Threatens Qxb7# and discovers an attack on the queen 1-0


An interesting pattern to note is how the black queen remained on black squares and the white king remained on white squares, meaning that black could never steal tempo with a check. 12 Qe8 would have stopped the bishop sac and put the black queen on a light square.

I like to play these formations with e6 and d6 myself. But not like this.
