from what some good chess players told me if you have knights without a rook or a queen later in the game your screwed is this true

It's Depending on the position

Endgames are complicated..mostly knights are weaker than bishops in endgames but knights are often stronger than bishops in closed positions..As Twinigo says it depends on the current position.

It can depend on whether the pawns are bunched together or spread apart. The bishop has the disadvantage of being able to affect only one color, but it has the advantage of being able to cross the entire board in one move. The knight, of course, can cover either color (although not on the same move), but it takes more than one move to go very far.

Bishops pair against the knights..for example how difficult it can bee for the knights to jump fast..look at this game were the short endgame starts after the rooks is gone:
