[re-post in the hope of getting some help!]
I am having a private tournament with friends currently and 2 players are missing from the second round. They both lost their games in the first round, but according to the swiss system they shouldn't have been eliminated (other players that lost their first games are still in the tournament, in any case). Neither of them tried to remove themselves from the tournament (which is impossible anyway once the tournament has started, right?). Any help or an explanation appreciated.

They lost by time-out. On QA there is a rule that players are eliminated in swiss tournaments when they lose a game by time-out.

thankyou! there seems to be a lot of confusion about the workings of private tournaments, maybe a page explaining the process and little-known rules (such as this time-out elimination rule) would save a lot of forum posts like this one Miguel...?
