Thanks for the explanation whyBish. I play on other sites so I was aware of the first reason you gave but I hadn't heard of the second one before.

I've bowed to the inevitable and joined a tournament for players up to 1300.

Onceupon, thanks for your help. I agree that the thread shows that the explanation given is still not clear. My comment was a general one based on what I have seen on a number of websites; there are always problems with ratings. I cannot change that, and my method of seeking closure is to join lower ranking tournaments. But I am grateful for the responses I have had.
