That's a big duh, but turns out to be the source of the problem. I must have accidently disallowed the cookies that I meant to allow when I registered last week. I have my cookie jar set for "prompt" in Firefox and Explorer.
Firefox works fine now. Thanks, and sorry to create so much trouble.
