So I've been playing a few unrated games of the Jerome Gambit .... the last one is coming to and end and I was wondering what to try next .

So anyone suggest some interesting or unusual openings to try .

It's just a bit of fun so not after anything deep and mired in opening theory , something that sets up an interesting game ;-)

Suggest away .....

I've had some surprising success with the Grob Attack (1.g4) against players rated as high as 1900. Rated over that you'll see why it's not so good. ;-)

1b4 and 1f4 are both interesting and can hold their own. Particularly 1f4 for me seems to end up in a kingside attack, although it's not always from white :-P
If you are interested in avoiding theory rather than using the first mover advantage then 1c3 can be useful, but against good opponents you can get steamrolled for playing a move that doesn't influence the centre or help any pieces at all develop.

Odie:

A paraphrase of your comments might start out, "I've had some surpising success with the Grob...against players...400 points below me." Since you're 2300+, maybe the success didn't really involve the Grob? :-D

Pick up your opponent's Queen and put it in your pocket.

Well I've found a couple to try ...

whyBish's f4 .... Polish , Outflank variation : 1. b4 c6 2. Bb2 a5 3. b5 cxb5 4. e4

Clivethebeard suggested a sideline in the Modern Benoni

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 e6 4. Nc3 Qe7!?

Having played Odie I suspect that the Grob would be fairly effective against someone rated about 2100 too .... ;-)

Onceupon .... apposite as usual :-P
