Thanks for the in depth analysis, richerby. So let's say I attack on the 7th row and black goes into a defensive shell. White advances the king and pawns. What would you as white be thinking in terms of doing - promoting a pawn? forcing exchanges? somehow gaining a greater material advantage?

I'd be aiming to use my pawns to break open his shell and then using my materal superiority, coupled with the fact that he's backed into corner, to checkmate him. Material might be won along the way but I'd be going for the kill.
Avoid exchanges of pieces unless you can see a clear way to force the promotion of a pawn. While KR vs KN (with no pawns) is technically a win for the side with the rook, it's very difficult.

In such an open position both the knight and king are much more manoueverable than the knight so it would be a matter of first trying to create on point to attack, and then switching the attack to a weakness that is hard for the knight to switch to. Being 3vs3 pawns you don't really have the option of trying to create a passed pawn without first using your piece advantage.

To me, the best move emerges as clear as day: 32. fxe4 is best. A whole piece ahead will win easily.

ernesto, that leaves white up a knight but down two pawns, does it not?
