Consider the following perverse scenario. A,B,C, and D are in the same section of a tournament. A has not used any vacation time all year. He has 45 days and at the end of those 45 days he gets 45 more days becuase a new year starts for him. He takes his 45 days for his new year immediately. 46 days after the start of the tournament he takes another 45 days. 3 months he has not moved. He makes his first move. At that moment his opponent, B,has 45 days for the present year and his calander year expires in 45 days. He copies the vacation folley of player A. 6 months have elapsed each player has made one move. The section is ends in a tie. palyers C and D each score 10 points. When the second round begins players C and D have vacation allotments identical to A and B allotment at the start of round 1 respectively. C plays E from section 2. E has the same allotment as B at the start of round 1. F advanced from section 4. F is in the same situation as A from round 1. F plays D. 6 months after the start of round 2 C,D,E,
and F have all made only 1 move. G was in section 5 of round 1. He wins every game without using vacation. His opponents play as quickly as he does. Even his opponents that are on vacation move quickly in his game. He will have to wait a year before he can start the final round. His opponent in the final is player F. Player F made move 2 6 months after the start of the game in both round 1 and round 2. He needed exactly 6 months to finish each of those games. 2 years has elapsed and he is posed to take another 90 consecutive vacation days thus forcing G to be idle for 15 months before he gets to start the final round.

One "remedy" would be to play a bunch of short time control games whilst waiting.

Auto Open Tournaments take a year or 2. I think that very few tournaments are delayed my more than 2 months due to vacation time. An easier way to make the tournaments run faster is to start the next round as soon as all the particepants are determined. I dont think the tournament should be delayed waiting for a game that will determine fourth and third palce in a section to finish.

I run super fast tournaments 10d/a. The possibility of one player having 45 vacation days availible and his oppponent having none creates a huge advantage. I want my tournament to finish in a few months. The possibility of someone delaying my tournament by 90 days is also a problem.
