I think that is absolutely valid phys ... generally speaking of course.
I'm sure some would play the diagram better for various reasons including experience. My perception is that I would have better vision on a real board but I've played thousands of games now on the diagram and not a single OTB in that time. My perception may now be false!

For me the diagram in QA(or other sites) provides a better visual as everything is within your limited viewing span. Thus it enhances your analysis of the position. While in an OTB game, you have a helicopter view of the pieces and position plus the shadows and other distracting glare including the annoying glare of the opponent. On the other hand playing internet chess will enable you to play multiple games and tends to play them simultaneously. Thus reducing quality analysis time of the games. In OTB, very seldom you can play simul in any regular day.
