This was one of my first games here against Cleiter. What surprised me the most was the amount of theory that he threw at me and his knowledge of the Sozin.

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. Bc4 e6 7. Bb3 Be7 8. O-O O-O 9. Be3 {This move under severe scrutiny at my lab because maybe the bishop doesn't want to be there in the first place. I am not sure how to solve this but I will try to see whether I can improve here or not.} 9...a6 10. f4 Nxd4 11. Bxd4 b5 12. a3 Bb7 13. Qd3 (So far this is Fischer-Spassky, 1972 shown below} 13...Re8 {This one is a new move that I have never seen before. As far as I understand Spassky's 13...a5 was aimed at preventing 14.f5. Therefore I played precisely that move to see what Cleiter had in mind...} 14. f5 e5 15. Be3 Rc8 {So this is it, he wants to sacrificy the exchange at c3 to get control over the center. However, I don't consider such compensation enough as White's pawn structure remains solid} 16. Rad1 Rxc3 17. Qxc3 Nxe4 18. Qd3 h6 19. Bd5 1-0

In actuality cleiter just stopped playing and lost on time. However, the riddle is still unsolved and after 18.Qd3 the position is still very unclear to me. It is a pitty that cleiter stopped playing this interesting game and left many questions unanswered... Even after his last move the game is still complex...

I don't know, I think the position of cleiter is too weak in the center even before the sacrifice to change the rook against a knight, but I must say that the game becames a lot more interesting after 16..Rxc3.

To my personal feeling, the pawn at d6 will be a pain along all the game. :-/

Anyway... if had to choose something in the game I will have considered to take the e4 pawn with the bishop instead of the knight at move 17.Qxc3...

Indeed! 17...Bxe4 with the idea of ...d5, ...d4 or the long plan ...Qa8, ...Rc8 looks like very, very rich plans in ideas. I thought he that cleiter was going to pursue one of those plans but what do I know?
