When does the middlegame end and the endgame begin? Do we define endgame in terms of material present? Both sides start with the equivelent of 39 pawns. Can endgame be defined with a number? The middlegame ends and the endgame begins when the stronger side has less than X in material points.

I tend to define endgame as the phase of the game where the king becomes a bold and agressive piece. However Kings are not very bold Queen vs Queen endings. And how do we quantify the phrase bold and agressive. In my opening my I opponent often trades Queens on move 5. I lose the right to castle but then I need my king near the d file to prevent rook penetration. In this opening my king on e7 is less timid than other openings were it cowers on g8. While e7 is good for the king e5 would be disasterous when my opponent still has a rook and 3 minor pieces.
I welcome your thoughts.

The centipede was happy, quite,
Until a toad in fun
Said, "Pray, which leg goes after which?"
This worked his mind to such a pitch,
He lay distracted in a ditch,
Considering how to run.

IMO the endgame begins when both players have <14 points or when the last third of plies (half-moves) are played or perhaps both!

For me the middlegame begins as soon as one of the parties has developed all his pieces.
When the endgame starts is a more difficult question, which I believe, you only can answer after a game has finished. And still then it is discussable.

I've always noticed that the endgame commences when players take longer over their moves.

I don't think there is a difference in the amount of time used per move in the midgame and endgame.
