Is it ok to ask a player to resign?
A player just asked me to but found it rude although I do admit that I am in a losing position. I am open to this kind of scenario for my opponent but what is the chess ethics surrounding this topic? I think chess players are smart enough to know if they are losing but refuse to resign to see how the game develops or if the other player commits a blunder.

Ask...?! We need ways to FORCE the opponent to resign. Any suggestions? :-(O)

I think it is not ethical to insist on a lost game or, on the other side, ask someone to resign, but I understand the weaker player has the right to go on until he is mated. Maybe he wants to learn some lesson by watching you to capitalize the advantage. Or maybe he wants to practice playing in a inferior position or, as you said, to dream of a blunder by you, who knows. Sometimes I take a little longer to resign because I notice the guy is still wandering, without a clear or good plan to end things. Who said you never win a game by resigning? We play so many simultaneous games here that it should not be a big issue to wait for the man to resign, unless you were about to miss the train back home! :-D . Speaking of blunders, yesterday my opponent just hung a beautiful queen, free of charge. He had a promising attack but I had a hunch he "could" get too over confident and "forget" my queen on the other side of the board, hidden behind four of five pieces, which he actually did... The good and bad thing when you play against humans is that they might blunder badly and you can use some psychology, opposed to playing machines like fritz that will never fall for our cheap traps /:-(

The ethics are clear: under no circumstances may you ask an opponent to resign. Etiquette, however, suggests that a player in a clearly hopeless position may resign, and in serious competition, a resignation might be expected. When a player plays on, bad manners may be on display, but not bad morals.

Is there some rule about this?..I know player who offered VOID to resign..!
I did not do that against VOID but he have the record against me to play long time lost position to the end..check mate.. :-O its boring to spend time on such games but I am sure its really worser for the player who is losing instead of resigning and consentrating on other games.. ;-)

If you ask somebody to resign the reverse will happen.
