Annotators write of strong players, strong moves, strong games, strong positions, strong manuevers, strong squares, strong color complexes, but no one defines strength in chess.
When Kasparov won his match over Karpov, he didn;t say he was the best player in the world, he declared he was now "the strongest."
If it is not just a comparative, not just a rating number, what is the true meaning of strength in chess? The notion of being certain certainly has a magnetism attached to it. . . but what is strength in chess?

I feel like philosophising today!
:-)
Strong Player: Knowledgeable and skillful player. He knows how to use his knowledge to win. He calls the shots and conduct the games according to his will. Resourceful.

Strong move: Move that asks for accurate response or face disaster. It is usually unexpected because it is not ordinary. Forceful.

Strong game: Game close to perfection. No mistakes, non obvious combinations. Precision. The winner usually plays a beautiful song, and the loser dances awkwardly to it.

Strong Position: No weakness on the stronger side. The weaker side searches for flaws and ways to break it to no avail. Better to pray for a miracle.

Strong Maneuvers: Out of ordinary. Forceful. Long range calculation. No satisfactory refutation.

Strong square: Vital. Strategic. Very expensive square feet on the board, often worth a piece, even a Queen!

Strong color complexes??? Call Freud or Jung!

Strongest Player: The better fit, The better prepared, the luckiest, among giants, at the moment of the match, the tournament, the season, the era. Someone like Nietzsche would love to call the strongest the best or the other way around, but other doctrines would probably favor other aspects like creativity, harmony, regularity, beauty etc etc... :-O

What is strenght in chess? It is force, endurance, something hard to break, to bend,to beat.

Shamash,

when Kasperov said he was the strongest he meant 最利害
strong players, strong moves, strong games, strong positions
etc just means 'good', as in good players, good moves etc.

So, if you want to find out how 'strong' you are at chess, play some games here at QA :-D

I am likely the strongest here on QA for my 200 records in powerlifting but I am not the best one..even for I sometimes play strong moves in weak position! 8-)
