Robelix - a fascinating story, I remember reading about Mecking as a kid in the early 70s. There wasn't much chess news available then, he just seemed to disappear without much written about it.
It is very unfortunate that we was sick so long, but good to see he has recovered and it playing chess again.

Yes, Bobby, Mecking was a wonder boy in the sixties and, like Fischer, won everything in Brazil when he was something like 14 years old.
Well we are the same age, 41, and I remember having to wait a week to get news from Fischer x Spasky match in 1972! We are lucky to have survived to see Internet and watch live Kasparov's last game against Topalov!
I heard Mecking's ilness was such a degenerative thing that for a time he had to eat from someone's else mouth. He tried to return in the mid 90's and you can even see his picture at the Linares site, in the hall of fame there. But then he had already lost the old flame and force to fight...
