Anyone else get a thrill from sacs? Especially ones where there are some lines in which you're not quite sure if you'll get full value for your piece? 'Dubious, therefore playable' by Tartakower is a great qoute which comes to mind here.

Recently I've been on a sac kick, and made some rather iffy decisions to toss a piece. In general they've turned out well for me, though of the two on this site only one really offered me the positional advantages I felt were worthy of the piece.

See:

for an example of a quite dubious knight sacrifice from which I really did not expect to get even good positional plusses, though after game analysis with Fritz showed the response I feared from my opponent to still offer me good value. I probably wouldn't have found the right moves to achieve that value, though, so I still consider it very dubious considering my limited abilities.

How do you feel about sacrifices? Do you only sac if you are sure there is a mating attack? How about for positional gains? How good a positional gain does it have to be, and what type? What kinds of results do you get? Do you have a favorite sac you made which you wouldn't mind posting?

Thanks for any thoughts.

In your game, the sacrifice was absolutely winning and 8...e5 was just a blunder. Riskier are those sacrifices where your opponent has several moves to set up defense afterwards and the lines are not so forced. For example one game I played as White:

1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.e3 Bg4 5.Bxc4 Nf6 6.Nc3 Bxf3 7.Qxf3 Qd7 8.Bb5 O-O-O 9.Bxc6 bxc6 10.Nb5 Nd5

After 11. Nc3 White is better but Black would have chances as well. Instead I sacrificed the knight with 11. Nxa7+!? and after 11...Kb7 12.Nxc6 Qxc6 13.O-O Black's king is looking really precarious with a queenside attack on the way. As it happened my opponent lost her nerve while defending, blundered back the material with interest and quickly got mated in the process.

Sometimes sufficient compensation is to reach a position where your opponent is liable to making mistakes. I wouldn't play this kind of dubious sacrifices other than in a position where it's hard to find anything better or where you are going to lose anyway. Why not lose with style and have fun in the process?

I was worried about Bb4+ wherein I would have to move my king and lose the initiative. Also, even after accepting the sac, Kd7 seemed a concern to me. Heres a sac you might like better for its risk factor:

Can you post a link or continuation of the game you mentioned? I found the line so far to be pretty.

Ah yes, a common occurence in the KID: tactical sacrifice to open a file at the enemy king. It looks dangerous though Black's defense was dubious at best.

My game ended thusly (pay no attention to the missed mate in one):

11.Nxa7+ Kb7 12.Nxc6 Qxc6 13.O-O f6 14.Bd2 e5 15.Rfc1 Qb6 16.dxe5 fxe5 17.b4 Bxb4 18.Bxb4 Qxb4 19.Rab1 Kc8 20.Rxb4 Nxb4 21.Qa8+ Kd7 22.Qa4+ c6 23.Qxb4 Rhe8 24.Qb7+ Ke6 25.Rxc6+ Kf5 26.Qf7+ Ke4 27.Qf3+ Kd3 28.Kf1 Rb8 29.Qf5+ e4 30.Qd5# 1-0
