Can unpaid members not play rated games, or am I just missing something?

You don´t have to pay anything to have full acess to all sites features.
QueenAlice is "100%" free...
If you like you donate... that´s the idea.

If you are having problem to play a game, maybe it´s because your rating doens´t match the tornament type...
Unrated players have to play to acquire a "initial provisional" rating... then you can play...
You can start on OPEN tornaments, or games that doens´t have a restriction to ratings...
