Because it doesn't allow you to take a tour of the website before deciding to play on it. The very first page practically demands you to sign in order to see more... I don't know... Maybe I will register...

On the opening page there are two options.

1) Sign on

2) Guest access

Under Guest access it says "If you just want to have a look at the site without registering as a player."

Did you miss that?

I am not an expert in webpages design and I will try to be constructive in this.

1) The links expressed explicitly: If you open the webpage http://www.schemingmind.com there are five links to different sections:

1. Home
2. Journal
3. Schemingmind.com
4. Sign in to SchemingMind.com here
5. Register as a new player here

Nowhere in there it says that I can take a tour so the first impression that I gather is "either I sign or I don't see anything" Only when I click on the link to sign in is when I see that I can log as a guest. It might be a minor point but it is a confusing matter. This can be fixed easily by making a link available that says "Sign in as a guest" openly in the webpage. Ah! I have to work hard every day to read and find things and the last thing I want to do is having to go through a document to find my way around on a webpage. When I am at home in my pajamas in front of the computer I want to be able to navigate easily without having to figure out what's going on.

2) Fontsize and graphics: The second thing that I found difficult to deal with was the font of the letters. I have sight problems and the fontsize of the webpage is small. In my opinion less text and more graphics facilitates the navigation through the material (I am a very visual person.) Reading through this:

"Welcome to SchemingMind.com Online Correspondence Chess Club. SchemingMind.com is an online chess club where you can play correspondence, turn based chess. Each game you play is stored on the server, so you don't need to keep track of your moves. An email is automatically sent to you whenever one of you opponents moves. You can either play your friends at chess, or select opponents at random. Registration is free for 'standard' membership. You should be able to find your way around the site using the menus above."

One gets the impression that it could have been broken into digestible bullets.

Anyway, yes, I missed the guest option in the sea of text with small font in a website that in my opinion can be better designed and organized... I hope that this was constructive...

OK... I just realized via Austin that perhaps this discussion should be pursued privately because it concerns another website and not queenalice...

I've just realised you're right. I always go straight to the login page and miss the front page.

Steven.
