Hello!

I have a doubt about what should be considered more ethical in the situation I'm in this game:

http://www.queenalice.com/game.php?id=134459

My oponent obviously was in advantage. But I forced a situation where he, even in advantage, cannot checkmate me because I'm continuously checking him with my tower. However, if he captures my tower, the game will be a draw by stalemate.

My opinion is that a draw is fair, once I planned the stalemate when I was in disadvantage.

My oponent's opinion is that I should resign, because he is in advantage.

What is your opinion?

This is forced draw by excellent idea were the stealmate is the point..if your opponet refuse draw much more I think youshould write Miguel about this..
Myself have similar problem to Arto20 Finland who refuse draw in position with teory draw:http://www.queenalice.com/game.php?id=53330
White cannot do anything with his matarial as his bishop is on wrong color..and black king walks from h8-g8 and will not be pushed from that exept with stealmate..I am not sure but perhaps computer programs dont understand this?..but master player with Arto20 ELO should know this..but well???...Perhaps I also must talk to Miguel..!

If you can force a draw in an inferior position, do it!

Gambitshark,

Thank you for your reply. If the situation takes longer I'll contact Miguel.

Just to answer your question: "I am not sure but perhaps computer programs dont understand this?"

I'm a computer scientist, and the problem is that an human error is still possible in both games. In mine, for example, suppose that in move 60, when I played Rd3+, I've captured his tower instead. This would change the game situation, since it would allow my opponent to promote a pawn. So, computer programs cannot assume that all players know how to play, nor assume that nobody makes mistakes.

Arliones, I could write you in Portuguese but...The game is Draw by perpetual check. He cannot get rid of the checks and cannot capture the Rook (Torre=Rook) ;-)because the stalemate .

As your opponent is a 1500's rated player, he may not know all the rules of chess, and that's why he may be very upset by drawing a game with 5 extra pawns, thinking you're not enough courteus to allow him win the game !

But unfortunately for him, he fell for this good trap of yours and must concede draw, and next time pay attention to the game and chances of the weaker side! Just contact Miguel and he will settle the problem.

As for your other question, any cheap average chess software "knows" this position is draw and would foresee your trap. When you finish the game just setup this position and offer draw to the computer and it should accept right away! Ahh If you wanna talk about computer chess ask the player Beco, in good Portuguese, as he is a freak chess software programer!

Very well put by robelix and by Gambitshark. You achieved a good result in the face of bad odds. Nice work! Tom
