The idea is very easy to implement. You just virtually give the player, who still has his games in progress, 2 points (i.e.: a win) for every game he has in progress. If the resultant score of the player is greater than or equal to the score of the group winner then this man still has a chance and so we wait till the round completes. But if it is less, then we already have the group leader!

what about alternating the time-limit for each tournament. e.g., OPEN-548 has a time limit of 7 days/move, OPEN-549 has a time limit of 3 days/move, etc.?

It could open simultaneously, no problem at all.
For example, it could use a sign like:
Auto-Open-1-548 for 1 day/move
Auto-Open-3-548 for 3 days/move
Auto-Open-7-511 for 7 days/move
Auto-Open-14-421 for 14 days/move
Auto-Open-10-680 for 10 days/all
Auto-Open-30-001 for 30 days/all
Auto-Open-60-117 for 60 days/all
Auto-Open-90-212 for 90 days/all

It's a very good idea  [Bravo for the members databass and beco !!] ; or e.g.: AUTO-ELITE-101/7 has a time limit of 7 days/move, and, AUTO-ELITE-101/3 has a time limit of 3 days/move [or maybe 3 days/move + 7 bank days..]; AUTO-ELITE-101/30 has a time limit of 30 days/all, etc.. :-)
Btw., hmm yes, 7 days/move, this is a very, very slow tournaments tempo  , and, I don't like it.. [but, 3 days/move {or 30/60 days/all}, this is absolutely OK ]
