Allowing the players themselves to chat during the game doesn't increase the opportunity for cheating. Allowing other players to comment on a game in progress (i.e., `kibitzing') does.

Anyone can observe any game at any time already...and any member can leave messages, whats the difference if its an instant message?

It's a psychological point, I think. Making it easy to make comments on a game in progress gives the impression that it's acceptable to do so.

And, as you say, it's a correspondence site. The emphasis isn't on real-time interaction, which is available at other sites.

This doesn't really explain how it would make it more susceptible than the system already in place. Maybe its just my naivety.

As its been stated...being a correspondance site, I don't know why people would sit in on a game to make comments helping a player 'cheat', when the players would possibly, and more than likely not be there. Even still, a 'kick' or 'boot' option would be an easy remedy.

Though, I could understand people discussing a match being played by masters, analyzing tactics, and asking questions of more experienced players.

My not understanding is probably just my lack of experience...I hope this doesn't come off as argumentative, or trying to be overly persuasive towards the site owner/admin, it certainly isn't meant to.

My guess is that you're being naïve, I'm being paranoid and the truth is somewhere in the middle. ;-)
