It would certainly be work to program in conditional moves but the overhead should be pretty minimal, bearing in mind how many games we're talking about and the rate at which moves are made. A simple system, allowing a single conditional line (i.e., ``I move 1.e4 and, if 1... c5 then 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4'') would add very little overhead.

conditional moves would be great!

Dear Miguel,

It can be so simple as richerby wrote, but in a beta-version, it could be even more simple.

All you need to do is add a "LineEditBox", so one can type a conditional variation, just like we type comments or messages today.

So, using the same example above:

* I move on the board 1. e4
* I write the conditional: 1. ... c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4
* I write some comments if I wish, and/or a private message to the opponent
* I click on offer draw if I wish
* Then finally I click on "submit button".

After that, from now on, every time the opponent make a move in the variant registered, he will get my answer automatically and the board will be back to his turn (of course, with all move time to him).

After this beta-test, you can think on enter the conditional moves other way then an EditLineBox.

Cheers,
Beco.

BTW, thinking a little bit more on the subject, the LineEditBox has the advantage of allowing cut/past text.

So, one can write in a text file the opening move he like and always use the conditional moves.

If instead of a single line, the box allow us to type one conditional per line, we can after some effort and study, use to our games practically all conditional answers to the most used openings we face.

;-)

Good luck,
Beco.

gardez2005 speaks of other servers that use this system. I would be very interested in knowing what these are and if they are free to use.
