Davidg has a point. But there might be a simple solution. I've only been on QueenAlice since 31 May, but have already had many games that were continued during my opponent's 'vacation'. Which is to say, they did find an internet-accessible place even in inner Borneo (if that's where they were at) and done their next move despite the constraints of recreation!
So why not make tournaments a binding commitment? Most of us know well beforehand when we will be having our holiday. It could either be a gentleman's agreement not to enter a tournament when one has a vacation soon, or something much more simple and effective. Disallow vacation time in the case of tournament games! For ordinary games, we should not grumble. But to keep tournaments going where the participants actually remember what was going on at the time, some discipline might be welcome.

So let's limit the vacation feature for 1-2 weeks that's it.

Please be sensitive to the real-life circumstances of other players.
As a Singaporean junior college student with a hectic schedule, I only spend about 15 minutes per weekday on QueenAlice during the school term (I can spend more time during the weekends and school holidays). Hence I play 7 days/move games and usually take at least 5 days to move. I am not intentionally stalling games, although I do move faster when I am winning or when the right move is obvious.
Once, on another turn-based chess website, I took a two-week postponement due to my end-year examinations. Several users accused me of stalling games and urged me to move promptly. Needless to say, I no longer play at that website.

I fully agree with hildanknight.

I vote for 3days and a bank of 7. Without any change on vacations rules. This will for sure accelerate the pace of the tournament even with some vacations.
