And I always thought Tagalog and Filipino is one and the same language.

Pilipino(with a 'p' not an "f')is the national language while Tagalog is one of the dialects and is the base language of Pilipino. "Ajedrez" is not a Tagalog word but from the Bisayan dialect which your wife speaks.
