At 8 years old, a friend taught me to play. It was about 7 or 8 years before I actually mated him, and to this day I believe he let me win. His father taught him and I am certain his dad could have been one of the best in the country at the time. I also learned to play what was called a gentleman's game. If my queen was put in jeopardy, my opponent would tell me to guard my queen. I have not yet seen this on this site. I guess it is just a courtesy and should not expect this. Of course if I put my own queen in jeopardy, nothing was said.

I would also add I am going on 50 years old and untill 2008, I have not played more than 4 or 5 games in the last 25 or 30 years

My father learned me to play chess. Can`t remember exactly what age I had, I think about 10 years.
