I learned the game myself through trial and error. Chess books also gave me some knowledge, but I'm still a beginner.

My mother got me to play chess at age five or so, and was among my first opponents. She had the disadvantage of not caring a whit whether she won or lost (you know the type: "above that").
At age six or seven, a family friend was babysitting me and also comforting one of his students, a tournament player with a severe case of heartbreak. He got the two of us to play a game, and mr Lovelorn paid so little attention that I was winning at first. Then he suddenly noticed, started playing at his usual level and even though he was a rook and a piece behind, wiped me off the board. At least for the moment, he realised again that there was more to life than his ex-girlfriend. Chess can even heal, under the right circumstances!

I learned chess from a book at age 10. I played my younger brother for years. I played in high school on a chess team. When internet came out I played chess regularly. I have played for at least 48 years now. I did read lots of books and have improved over the years. My younger brother also plays on Queenalice but he is an 1800 player.

I never learned the game. To this day, I simply make random moves on the board and sometimes they're legal. Needless to say this really irritates my opponents

Learned the legal moves when I was about 10, but didn't take to it. Played 2 games badly when in early college (18-19 years old). Got hooked at 23 years old when in basic training in the army. Have tried off and on since then to improve. That's about 36 years ago.
