would it be possible to include the ECO code when you click on "download games in PGN"? it is included at the top of the game so i don't imagine determining what it is would be a problem

Done, I'm sorry I missed to do this when I added ECO codes!

I feel embarrassed to ask but since I've got less than a year in on using a computer if I don't ask I'll never know. What is an ECO code and what does PGN stand for. %-) %-) %-) %-)

The "Encyclopedia of Chess Openings" is one of the standards for listing openings, and has assigned standard codes, which are called "ECO codes".

Let's say you're studying the Nimzo-Indian Defense, and want to find a lot of games where it was used. Among other sites, you could go here: http://www.bookuppro.com/ecopgn/e.html and you would find that ECO codes E20-E59 all deal with the Nimzo, because there are many variations. If you download some games from that site, they will be in PGN format.

PGN stands for portable game notation, and is a generic form of listing the moves of a game (and some other information), which virtually all chess programs can read. It's like a lingua franca for chess programs. If you're familiar with computer spreadsheets (e.g., Microsoft Excel), a PGN file would correspond to a CSV (comma separated value) file, which most spreadsheet and database programs can import.

BTW (By The Way), those aren't dumb questions at all...nothing to be embarrassed about. I teach college part-time, and always tell the students the first night NOT to be too embarrassed to ask questions, because someone else probably has the same question, and you're helping them learn. This great (!) site seems to have a lot of newer players, so your questions might help many!

HTH. (Hope This Helps)
