Yup, "quick" is older English for "alive", and we still retain it with regard to the fingernails.

Of course, I always thought that "the quick and the dead" was a way to define the two types of pedestrians in downtown traffic, too... :-(O)

It is nice that the Oxford dictionary is slower to change pronunciation and meanings than American dictionaries, which would influence British to change how they speak and write English more slowly than Americans.

American dictionaries encourage faster changes in the language, since they change according to popular usage at a faster rate, which would influence Americans to change even faster.

I suppose it would be best if someone started a separate post for grammar discussion.
