Sounds worse than BabelFish!

Really?

"hello very good tournament congratulation one will make some can be one with the course d' another tournament"

Though it strikes me that if French illiterates are as common as English ones, the original message stands a very good chance of befuddling the translators.

No offence :-P

Well,

1st - There's a long time that I do not study French, but I think that my translation was not SO terrible!! :-(O)

2nd -
Anyway, it is recommended that you write in at least a little English as this is a more universal means of communication. How hard can it be to learn a simple Thanks for the game. Or Well played?

Well done, Onceupon, You told what exactly I meant. Thanks!

3rd - I think, that's important to see the profile of your opponent everytime you would talk to him/her. You should know what language he/she speaks. If you do not speak Portuguese, why I'll tell you something in that language?

4th -
It means that most of french persons do not speak english...

Well chouia, This is a point that I would like to know why...?

Another "solution" would be to play only with opponents of your country....but I find far more interesting to play with anyone who wants, wherever he leaves.
By the way, I can translate any french sentence in (my own) english : that is, make it understantable to english spezaking persons, even if my english is not perfect, so if any of you have problems, do not hesitate to ask me, I shall be happy to help.

Most of the french do not know a lot about english,
- first because it is not very well taught in France : usually, english is only studied when entering college, and until the middle of the 70', most of the pupils did not enter college....
- second, the teachers are french, their accent is terrible, and their english is litterary, most of them never practice.
- the english part of the exams are written, not oral.
- we french are raised in the belief that, whatever we do, we cannot speak english correctly, because the accent is very difficult to learn, and the pronunciation is impossible for "french mouths" (especially the "th").
- we french believe that the french language is the most beautiful ever, the most poetic, the most "musical", the most complicated, the most distinguished, and more than that, "the language of love", whereas the english language is only considered as commercial and useful.... ;-)
- and maybe we french are simply not interested...
anyway, whatever the efforts we make to speak and write english, there will always be some english or american guy to laugh at our accent or at the slightest imprecision or error we will make (as it is for me everytime I post on this forum : last time on the post "women and chess", I have been criticized for an error!), so... :^-(
