The server knows when we are online.
Sometimes we meet our opponents online, and many moves are made over a short time. Great fun!
Afterwards, we need to clean up eight or more move notifications from our inbox. On a busy day, I once removed over a hundred of them (four different quick games with online opponents).
So, given that it costs a player time to clean up afterward, and uses a little bit of the server's capacity each time around to send emails to somebody who is already at play...
Might it not be an improvement if move reminders are only sent to those not online?

I agree that move reminders should only be sent when the player to move is not online. Thankfully Gmail sorts the notification e-mails into conversations, reducing inbox clutter.

Go to Email Options in the preferences menu. Uncheck all the boxes you judge unnecessary. Part of the solution might reside there...

Well, I checked the email options. I could turn off 'my move' notification, yes. But I do like one or three days per move and 10d/a games. Especially with the latter, it pays to know when to move on time.
Or, I guess, I could turn move notification off when entering Queen Alice. Might just try that, thanks! But still, I wouldn't mind a default setting not to notify when already present on the field of honour.
