Think carefully as to whether you really want this change. If QA starts allowing and rating (under one rating system!) all kinds of time controls, set opening events, speed chess and who knows what else, there will be no meaning or integrity in the ratings at all. This has already happened to some degree with 3day/move AND 7day/move events all rated under the same system. All I can suggest for the speed demons is that you enter more events and challenge more players so that you are assured of a constant supply of games. As for vacation time, it is a necessity for some of us...who on earth would want to get their kicks boring their opponents to death unnecessarily while simultaneously wasting their own vacation time??

I would think that 3-day and 7-day tourneys should not require a different rating system. This is very different from speed chess vs. "regular" chess; it's not a matter of how long you have to think, but just that life gets in the way. Could anyone actually take 7 days to make a decision of what move to make? I think 3-day tourneys would be good, but less than that would interfere too much with people's lives, and not ALL of the participants here are as addicted to this site as some of us are!

actually they already rate 3-day games so it wouldn't be a big deal at all. if you find the idea of making a move every 3 days (including vacations) offensive, don't join the tourney

Speed chess (blitz) is in minutes not days! A 3 day per move no vacation tournament would be fine and should be rated normally, as it is still correspondence type chess. Most players rarely take more than 1 or 2 hours at most to decide a move. Three days per move still allows refection time, should one wish to sleep on it, so-to-speak.

Remember, ONLY those wishing to play in this type of tournament need apply. The rating system needs no change at all - players who can handle this slightly faster time control can usually handle it without trouble, or affect to their true playing strength.

I like "fast" time controls as well, although I could see how serious players take their time to study each position over several days. Personally I have a harder time with very long games as far as keeping the handle from that opening to that middlegame and beyond. Perhaps the folks on this thread visit daily and move daily.

If there's ever a 10 day tournament (10 d/game each side), sign me up. 8-)
