The flaw in the rating system is bergmen shoud earn far less than a point when he beats someone 2000 points lower.
I think there should be supereight tournaments. Everyone, rated in the top 8, who has less than 6 unfinished games in supereight tournamnets should be automatically registerd in the next supereight tournament. If they refuse to play, that is they lose on time expired, they lose rating points to other players in the tournament. This method would validate the highest rated player as the best player.

Why should people be forced to play? There are easier fixes that could be made if the rating system was a concern. Personally I think Miguel made the right choice by giving high level players a reason to play against everyone, so I don't really care if Bergman is rated 'too high', at least I got a chance to play a player of his calibre, and it only cost me a couple of rating points.

An awesome idea; like maintaining one's GM title. :)
Although I suspect Y-Bish is correct in that there are probably more efficient methods...

I agree that that it is good that miguel gives high rated players an incentive to play lower rated players. I think that it is commendable that bergmen plays the rest of us.
I would like to know who the top players are. It is complicated to determine whose the best becuase we have to compensate for their rating being inaccurate.

I agree once again with whyBish. You can't force play on someone. Miguel could easily have imposed a high limit (3000) since no human can play at that level of FIDE rating. Yes, our ratings and FIDE ratings are not the same thing, but that is a minor point in this case.
Raeth, I think the GM titles are for life. They don't need to be maintained.
Phys, the tournament results I've compiled come pretty close to showing who the best are. There is a close 5-player battle at the top for 2010. Sure some might not play often but that fits with what you've suggested. If you don't play, you don't 'rate'!
