I'm with tewald on this one. It shows extreme insensitivity and I can only wonder if those arguing for the center here would change their mind if it was one block or 50 ft. or perhaps right at ground zero. After all, the high values expressed can not change so easily, can they?

The folks involved in this project could have taken the high road and moved it a bit further away as a show of good 'faith', but they just dug in their heals instead.

That doesn't portray the supposed message of a center to bridge the religious divide. It sounds more like planting a flag to me.

It shows extreme insensitivity

Indeed, Islam should stay 200 m away from ground zero, and Catholicism should stay 200m away from children :^-(
And perhaps I should have stayed 200m away from this topic.

Yes, there's sooooo much land available in Manhattan they must have had the pick of hundreds of alternative sites!

"I didn't want to comment here because it can only go badly, but to me it just seems to show there are some americans who are willing to drop the principles of their own constitution when it doesn't suit them."

whyBish, what is it you think you know about our Constitution? The first amendment says the federal government is not to establish a national religion, nor is it to inhibit religion. I am not the federal government, and I don't want the federal government involved. I'll stick with what I said before, trying it in different words: At the very least, this shows extreme insensitivity on the part of those pushing it, and at the most it's an in-your-face purposeful aggravation. Saying I don't want a mosque or other Moslem building that close to ground zero does NOT inhibit their ability to worship as they choose. I am not aware that ground zero has now become a new holy site to Moslems.

And Richerby, the Moslems attacked the holy land and took it from the Christians, and the crusades were the Christians' attempts to take it back. The Christians didn't start it.
