A great way to equalize as black is to move first.
I once played OTB 1.Nf6. My opponent said white moves first then played 1. ... d4. I replied I'm sorry 2. d6 and the game continued.
I was joking at the time.
As a TD if players play with the wrong color the result stands. And so does the assigned color for future pairings. In both cases, black makes first move or colors reversed I would rule as I would if white's first move was illegal.
