I'm a KID/KIA nut, so I play the KIA against the Caro:

1. e4 c6 2. d3 d5 3. Nd2 e5 4. Ngf3 Bd6 5. g3 Nf6 6. Bg2 O-O 7. O-O Re8 8. Re1

EChess05, I'm a KIA/KID guy, too, but not as successfully as you. Any helpful suggestions? Anyone in particular whose games you find helpful to study, or any favorite books or sites? Obviously, you're under no obligation here, but I would appreciate any help.

TIA,

Tom

I admit I'm still learning the intricacies of the KID/KIA myself, but if you don't already have them, I would suggest "Play the King's Indian" by Joe Gallagher for the KID and "Starting Out: King's Indian Attack" by John Emms. Gambit is releasing a KID book around Feb. called "Understanding the King's Indian" which may be worth a look if you don't have Gallagher's "Starting Out: The King's Indian", which I assume is around the same readership level as the forthcoming Gambit book. Back to the KIA. There was a book called "The Ultimate King's Indian Attack: Improve Your Results by Playing This Powerful Opening System" by Angus Dunnington but it seems to be out of print. I was able to download it as a pdf but hate reading e-books. From what I've gleaned, Starting Out: KIA seems to be very similar in structure to Dunnington's book and the only decent book easily available for the KIA from what I've seen on Amazon.

Thanks. I've had Dunnington's "How the Play the King's Indian Attack" for about 10 years (1993, 135 pp), although am just getting around to reading it. Looking at Amazon's display of the table of contents of "The Ultimate...", it's just like my copy, except that the chapters are expanded. I wasn't sure if it was worth buying a newer version. I also have Smith and Hall's "King's Indian Attack" (1988) from Chess Digest. Is there anything much new in KIA theory and/or practice that would make it worth buying a newer book? The Gallagher book shows up on Amazon with a pub date of yesterday! Yup...12/30/2005. Of course, they don't have it in stock, so maybe that was a bit optimistic. Have you read any pre-release reviews of it? Thanks, again.

Did you mean Mikhail Golubev’s “Understanding the King’s Indian"? Amazon has an erroneous publication date for it. The Gambit website has a pub date of Feb ’06 for the UK and it should hit the US about a month later. You can check to see when it’s released at www.gambitbooks.com. They will probably put up a sample pdf excerpt of the book when it comes out. As for reviews, I haven’t seen any yet.

I don't think KIA theory has changed much over the last 10 years or so. I have Emms' book for the KIA, but haven't crosschecked it against Dunnington's book, so I can't be sure. I suppose there would be more KIA books on the market (if only just to make a quick buck) if KIA variations fluctuated as they do in other openings.

The page listings for the chapters in "The Ultimate..." on Amazon match what's in my pdf version and Dunnington's forward is dated Nov 1998. The file is over 5.2 mb but I could email it to you if you'd like, if the filesize isn’t a problem.
