is there any way for me to avoid playing a particular player in the first round of a tournament at least? i play the same players over and over and certain players i find unpleasant and arrogant. is my only recourse to resign on move one?

The tournaments are paired randomly, the best thing you can do is not join a tournament when you see people you don't like to play with.

This is not a good idea (delay joining). The philosopher Kant said: you should do your acts as it could be done by everyone.
The better solution is to use the "ignore list" to help pair the first round. But this could restrict the pairings in such a way that even so one will play with other in his "ignore list".
Cheers.
PS. The better yet is to play against everyone, no matter if he is unpleasat or arrogant!

The ignore list can't be used here. Tournaments, almost by definition, must have randomized pairings.
Consider, I could join a tournament, and when only 1 or 2 slots remain, set my ignore list so I effectively pick my opponents for round 1. Tournaments are open for a reason. The best solution is to do as Miguel said and don't join any tournaments for which those annoying players are signed up for. --p

Correct, the ignore list can't be used for tournament pairings, that wouldn't be fair.

I forgot to mention that it was a suggestion. I know that it is not used in this way. But, reading the answers, I think it is not a good suggestion anyway.
Cheers.
