| I still think it's the best for you to see individual openings for yourself and choose those that suit you. |
I agree with Lecterror in this statement!
At first, you don't have to have a repertoire, just learn the basics and use it. If you loose a lot of games, it doesn't matter. Afterwards, the repertoire will appears naturally.

Hi WhiteKings
IMHO you must learn & play French defence & Sicilian defence.
Sorry I haven't read all replies yet, but if you are an 1.e4 player then as Black learning French & Sicilian is my humble advice. Then you will get to know these games well and do well against them.Of course there is a lot to learn (more with Sicilian than French, but together they will keep you well occupied.I feel it is good to know openings/defences from both sides (as black & white)if possible, & these fit with your white 1.e4.
I too play 1.e4 & am trying to learn French & Sicilian defences as black & am gradually getting better with them. (BTW 1.e4 is cool!)
Have fun with these defences (they are quite aggressive/attacking-yes even the French can be deceptive & pack a punch if you know it well). Some effort to learn them is needed- otherwise you may not progress with them.Anyway I am enjoying them more & more (they are challenging-but that's how chess is!).Goodluck

Humm! you can play solid stonwal pawn structure as white f4, e3, d4, c3 almost whatever black plays, and as black f5 after d4 or anithyng else but after e4 you have to try something else like e5. This is of corse boring but solid and simple. But dont play like this for to long or chess will become boring

It's hard to come up with an opening rep. when you are starting out. I am far from experienced (only a beginner) but it seems to me that you can try openings that do not require a lot of study. (There are quite a few good books out there now)I think it is harder when you play black, but at least with white, you get the chance to set the tone of the game. Take a look at games you have won and see if there is a particular pattern and pick an opening that reflects it.

As Black, I'm thinking about playing the French in response to 1. e4, and the Dutch in response to 1. d4. They seem to be positional openings which do not require you to study lots of theory.
Do you think this is a good idea? If so, could you recommend me some good websites (preferred) or books which would teach me the important variations and concepts of these openings?
