Do you have access to chess books? Try John Emms' treatment of the Scandinavian (1 e4 d5). The Scandinavian has had a lot of good theory published for it lately, a decent reputation when you know the main themes, and most people don't know *what* to do against it :-). I have tried KIA as white. You *can* play the same moves against everybody, more or less. But I've found myself defending against black pawn thrusts in the middle (some people say "That's right! That is the essence of the Indian systems!"). But this makes the KIA system rather passive, and I'm looking for something with a bit more fight as white. OTOH, the KIA vs. French is dynamite!

Against queen pawn openings, I've had recommendation of Nimzo-Indian and Bogo-Indian responses. My same book also recommends the Accelerated Dragon Sicilian against 1 e4, but I'm trending towards the Scandinavian lately.

Whitekings, I would suggest checking your record as white, and finding out which black opening gives you the most trouble. If you then study that one, you will not only learn a decent defence to 1.e4, but you can strengthen your play as white as well, if you keep playing 1.e4 as white. Just don't get too good too fast; I have a grandson older than you are! Sigh, I feel so old...

Superdad,
Try the Reti. It is similar to the KIA in its opening moves, and once you become even somewhat familiar with it, you will know the positions better than most of the rest of us!
