How do you go about choosing a defense to 1. d4? I have lots of material on KID, NimzoIndian, and Benoni. When I used to play more OTB, I found that the Czech Benoni came naturally to me, but that was 15 years ago. I was learning the KID when I started here, so I used that. Now I'm playing some OTB again, and I want to get more serious. I play a modified KIA as white, BTW. So...how do you suggest I decide? TIA, Tom.

I've been running through "Chess Openings for Black, Explained" (Alburt, et. al., ISBN 1-889323-12-8). The authors recommend the combo of Nimzo- and Bogo- Indian.

The Slav has been especially popular in the Kramnik-Topalov match

Thanks, but I was kind of hoping for hints about choosing among the 3 I mentioned.

Sorry, in that case, it seems to me (though I'm not exactly qualified to talk about GM games) that the Nimzo Indian / Queen's Indian / Bogo Indian complex is the most solid. About the Benoni, you could try the Benko Gambit, while the Taimanov variation (with f4 and Bb5) should be avoided as Black. The KID has been a favorite of mine, but it always gave me a lot of problems (I was masochistic :-D ), so I don't know what to say exactly :-)

Tewald,

I would say a Nimzo/Benoni combination would be best. Play the Benoni if white avoids the Nimzo with an early Nf3. That way you avoid whites' sharpest replies to the Modern Benoni where he plays f4. Kind of a Benoni with more manageable risks. 8-)

IMO from seeing you play, the Nimzo seems more suitable to your style of play. The KID is a glorious but demanding opening, the Nimzo seems more flexible. Having said that though, Petrosian played the KID :-D
