Getting rather off-topic but that hasn't been true since the 1930s! These days, all the major currencies are fully independent entities and gold is just a traded commodity like any other.

You forget that a `play for money pool' is the same thing as a `who has the fastest computer pool' and `having money on the outcome tends to make people pay attention' means `having money on the outcome tends to make people cheat.' ;-)
Ultimately, online ratings don't mean very much so it's not wise to get too hung up about them. There's no way to stop people cheating; there's no way to differentiate between people who are playing serious chess and those who are just playing for a laugh; there's no way to differentiate between people who are deeply analyzing positions, people who are giving reasonable consideration (say, roughly OTB speed) and people who are just blitzing out the moves.
