Tewald, you are NOT worse than your rating suggests. The problem is that you are taking the lower ranked provisional ranking seriously. More than likely, MUCH MUCH more than likely, that provisional player was a substantially higher rank than his/her ranking suggests. Why should we penalize you for losing to a 1500 player when in actuality you may have lost to a 2000 player? Or even a 2200? Or maybe they were an 1100 player and we should penalize you more. That's the point, you don't actually know what your opponent's true ranking was.
The protections make sense. The provisional ratings are not yet real ratings. It would be more fair to not adjust the established players rating win or lose, but then you'd have the same problem of getting anyone to play a provisional person. So, by allowing your ranking to increase the hope is people will play provisional players, by not allowing your ranking to decrease the system protects you from a vastly underrated player damaging your rank. Makes perfect sense to me. --p
