I think the size of the box for sending messages to opponents should be increased to the size of the private message box, to make it easier to send larger messages to opponents.

A lot of people agree. There was a long (and in places heated) discussion about this a few months ago - see the 'remove limit on in-game chat' thread currently on page 2 of this forum.

Thank you for telling me about that. It sounds like it is being considered by the site manager.
I think the size of the message box should be increased, not just the character limit. Since I am new to this site, I actually had not used the message box enough to know it had a character limit, but found it annoying that it could not even make a new line (by pressing enter) and that it was so small.

I also discovered there is a character limit in the 'a few words about me' box, which again i find a curious constraint considering the excellent community spirit behind this website, where we are all able and encouraged to get to know each other etc.

If there is a reason for these limits hopefully Miguel will let us know.

The first thing I'm thinking about is "hard space" (on whatever computer or server the site is hosted), and the second thing I'm thinking about is "exaggeration".

The latter refers mainly for the "about me" thingy. For instance, people could really start a blog up there with pictures and movies... do you really want that? ;-)

As for the in-game messages, I'm among the ones who don't want to be bothered while playing, and who doesn't like receiving comments. If the messages are limited, then at least I don't get novels if I really have to receive anything at all.

Plus, people could send blogs too ;-)

Well, seigneur, you might consider starting a feature request concerning a tick box to toggle in-game messages off entirely, if you feel the way you do. Some online games do feature such an option.

Speaking for myself, unlimited in-game messaging would appear to be too much of a good thing, though I don't think that "hard space" is much of an issue on our server 'puter ( 8-) 8-) ) Twice or thrice what it used to be seemed enough for me, at the time I participated in the thread x'Smash'x started... however:

I have the feeling that such an increase has already been silently implemented! It seems that the in-game message box allows for a bit more than the original SMS-and-a-half, nowadays. I might be mistaken. But between in-game and PM messaging, the point usually can get across.

The limit on 'few words about me' information I actually can appreciate. Mine changes regularly and it's good sound bite practice, too! On average, I'm in there somewhere...
