I think it would be best if - during the "no Miguel" era - people of goodwill who decide to leave the site would take the time to resign their tournament games (for reasons that should be clear from other discussions).

Want a another reason to resign an easily one game? ¡Because resigning to avoid a 12 - 0 first round score will help your tie break points! See, and comment at, Feature request, Tie Break Catastrophe.
This actually provides a good reason not to resign you can hope you opponent resigns to increase his chance of winning tournament. 
Another rule I hate is the 50 game rule. When our opponent doesn't resign that delays eligibility to join another tournament.
I support auto resign criteria for tournaments. The criteria would depend on tournament level. No auto resign for beginners tournament. For elite if a Fide 2000 would score 99% against Fide 2700 resignation is mandatory.
