Does anyone have any suggestions / links / book suggestions for how to play against the English? Ideally some defence that is double edged but not completely lost. I keep playing against the English with c5 and g6 type structure, but I'm obviously missing some theme as I tend to lose defending the English.

I must say, I play the English every now and then, but have always had a terrible time gaining an advantage with it. Say what we do a double game and both open with 1. c4? Unrated perhaps, so we can analyse it to bits as we go along... ya wanna?
The English sits somewhere half between the classical and the 'modern' families of openings: you seem to defend in the 'modern' vein, but you can also try going for the more boring, classical setup. It is also not too difficult to transpose the opening to something that you're more comfortable with: 1. c4 e6 2. d4 d5 gets you a Queen's Gambit, for instance. Or you can try for an Indian setup.
1. c4 e5 is the Flank Sicilian, in my book it continues 2. Nc3 Nf6 (if 2 ...Nc3, then 3. g3!) 3. Nf3 (if 3. g3, then 3. ... d5!) 3. ...Nc6 4. d4 exd4 5. Nxd4 Bb4. After 6. Bg5 white retains the initiative, Euwe adds, but must allow the doubling of his c pawn, creating opportunities for Black. I got lambasted with white playing this against ShahMaster, but then again, he's pretty good...

Take it from an Englishman and just resign

1 ..e6 does seem to fit with my style. I've been playing 1..Nf6.

Lol! I always play the reversed Sicilian, 1. ... e5, find myself fairly comfortable. But then again, I tend to generally suffer, with Black, against openings which are not 1.e4 or 1.d5. Oh and 1.b4 really pisses me off!

try to get similar pawn structure and piece placement of the 1.d4 defense that u play. for example if you as black you play grunfeld try to play: 1.c4, Nf6 2.Nc3,d5 with king bishop fiancheto. If u play duth defense as black on 1.d4, try to play 1.c4 f5. If u play NIMZO-INDIAN try to play 1.c4 e6 2.Nc3 Bb4 or something like that.Anyway, u get the picture. If u play like that u will enter into very similar type of position and you will not be completely lost with no idea what to do. Hope this helps you a little.
