Hi Doran,

Aren't you being a bit over-systematic in your approach here? Whether a comment is taken as rude or not depends on the context in which it is made, which is in constant permutation. The other factors would be the personality of your opponent and mood of the moment e.g. "My wife threatened to divorce me again today, and now my opponent is gloating over his won position???"

Point being, such factors are beyond your control let alone beyond your ken. So there's no such thing as an inherently rude remark unless it is an outright, pointed insult or sneer (sarcasm).

A sneer aimed at your friendly remarks above might go like: "Oh great. Free chess lessons!" People with a strong background in the sciences may sometimes miss the intent behind such a remark, believe they have found a kindred spirit, and start the tutorial in earnest.

Oh, and very few people like being reminded of having made a mistake. That was a hard lesson in my life, as I grew up as one of those pathologically honest boys.

Cheers, Asker.

@Tewald: Whoyagonnacall?

...well, a certain somebody on this very thread might be able to help. It's not me, by the way. He does the abstract stuff; equations etc. I do words.

@Doran: sqrt 196 = 14 (?!?)

@Fauquinelle

I thankyou for your comments. I have a new option. I can ask my opponent to read this discussion and give me his opinion before I conmment on his move. sometimes I am the one solociting chess advice from a stronger player.

as for the sqrt 196 = 14 I have developed a method of approximating imperfect sqrt. Consider sqrt 69 see off topic

Agreed with Gil. In particular, the Scientific Method, which does not allow for lies, politics or making a statement without being able to underpin it. In theory, anyway. ;-)

Ah yes, Theory... a lovely place to take a short holiday break!
